You can reduce your risk of becoming ill from campylobacteriosis and other food-borne illnesses if you:
- cook food to a safe temperature
- follow general food safety practices
- wash your hands often and properly
- drink boiled or bottled water, or water from a safe supply
- wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them
Do not prepare food for other people if you think you are:
- sick with campylobacteriosis
- suffering from any other illness of the stomach or intestines
You can help prevent others from getting sick by contacting your local public health authority to report a concern about:
- unclean restaurants or grocery stores
- possible food poisoning from a restaurant
Tips to prevent the spread of campylobacteriosis by animals
If you have pets or work with animals, you can reduce your risk of getting campylobacteriosis by:
- washing your hands well with soap and water after you handle:
- your pet
- animal waste, including:
- changing cat litter
- scooping up after your dog or livestock

- keeping pets away from areas where you store and prepare food
