Starting a new job at National Defence
Find helpful onboarding information and resources for your arrival and transition to the Department of National Defence (DND) as a student, casual, term or indeterminate employee.

Your first day
Your manager will help you get:
- a Department of National Defence identity card (if applicable)
- building pass
- National Defence network access and Public Key Infrastructure (D-PKI) card to work remotely (if applicable)
- equipment (laptop, keyboard, mouse, monitors, etc.)
- ergonomic assessment (if applicable)
All new employees
- Register for National Defence’s orientation session for new employees (indeterminate, term and casual employees) or DND’s orientation session for new students.
- Your manager will schedule an appointment for you to pick up your IT equipment and building pass. You must bring a copy of your signed letter of offer and a valid piece of government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s licence, passport, etc. to receive a temporary building pass.
- Subscribe to the Public Service Compensation Email Notification System.
New term and indeterminate employees
- Read your Collective Agreement to find information on rates of pay, working conditions, terms and conditions of employment, and leave provisions (if applicable).
Transferring from another government department
- Before your last day at your previous department, print a copy of your leave balances from the Human Resources Management System (HRMS). Verify that your balances transfer over correctly.
- Ask your previous manager to update your profile and release you in the in the Public Service Performance Management application (PSPM App) to ensure your new manager can add you as their new employee.
- Update your organization and email address in the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS) learning platform in the Settings and Account information section.
Former Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members
- Request a copy of your Member Personnel Record Resume by emailing CMP_DPSP_RBA_ABL_DPPS_CPM@forces.gc.ca. Pease provide the following information:
- Service number;
- Regular Force or Reserve Force;
- Ensure the subject line of your request states: REQ MPRR FOR PS VACATION CREDIT.
- Request a copy of a release message with your release date from your Release Administrator.
- Send the release message to your new manager to ensure your leave credits are adjusted.
Executives, unrepresented or excluded employees
- Enroll in the Public Service Management Insurance Plan
After your start date
- After you have access to the DND network, complete your onboarding (available only on the National Defence network).
- Until you gain access to the DND network, you can use your Defence365 (D365) account to begin working. D365 allows you to access collaboration tools you’ll be using at work. Read the D365 frequently asked questions for more information.
