Guidelines 800-8 − Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Protocol for managing significant exposure to blood and/or other bodily fluids

Why the change?

These Guidelines were amended to address a recommendation from the National Board of Investigation.

What has changed?

In paragraph 9, the following words in bold were added: “If the serological status of the source person is unknown, the Nurse, or the Officer in Charge if the Nurse is not on site, will ensure every effort is made to encourage the source person to be tested for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Testing of the source person will only be done with his/her informed consent”.

This guidelines revision was made by Health Services in collaboration with Strategic Policy and in consultation with the Human Resource Management Sector.

Who will be affected by the change?

Nurses who are on site following an incident where an inmate could potentially have been exposed to blood and/or other body fluids.
