Around the clock: Single source of time

Accurate network time is crucial to ensure system reliability and coordination. Currently, various departmental networks rely on various time sources for their network time service, which increases the risk of services becoming desynchronized. This is a big problem when you are trying to provide centralized enterprise services. Increasingly, getting time from the Internet or even GPS is at risk due to the increase in activity from bad actors. Efforts to consolidate and standardize the network time sources across departmental networks can help mitigate these risks and enhance overall system resilience.

SSC will soon be providing a new Enterprise Time Service (ETS) to all partner networks. The ETS uses the managed TimeLinkTM Remote Clock service from the National Research Council Canada as its primary time source. In addition, it can provide time into secret and isolated networks based on guidance from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

In addition to our presentation explaining the technology being used, you will also be able to view:

  • a “time stack” rack with all of the equipment that is used to implement the ETS
  • a demonstration of the time service monitor that shows the level of synchronization of all the time servers
