How to diagnose and treat a concussion

A concussion is diagnosed only by a licensed medical doctor or nurse practitioner based on symptoms and testing.

Concussions may take days to develop. It is important to have someone observe you for a few days after injury.

Concussions are treated under supervised medical care to monitor symptoms and support a step by step return to activities. Your doctor or nurse practitioner will provide a treatment plan which could include support from other healthcare professionals.

How to manage a concussion

Anyone diagnosed with a concussion should be managed by a healthcare provider. They can determine if you are fully recovered and can return to activities, such as school and sports.

Anyone who has suffered a concussion should return to school or work activities symptom free before engaging in sports. Medical clearance is usually required to return to sports after a concussion.
