The Interim Ombud

Robyn Hynes

On 2 July 2024, Robyn Hynes assumed the role of Interim Ombud for the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Her term in this position will be for one year.

Robyn has over 16 years of experience in roles supporting the Defence community, both regionally and in the National Capital Region. This includes 10 years of experience as the Director General of Operations at the DND/CAF Ombudsman’s office where she was responsible for the delivery of the office’s mandate—individual and systemic investigations, education, outreach and engagement.

From 2012 to 2014, Robyn was the Director of Early and Strategic Intervention for the Veterans Ombud. Prior to that, from 2007 to 2012, she held various roles within the DND, including positions in ADM (HR-Civ), ADM (Fin), and the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff.

Before joining the public service, Robyn was a consultant in Nova Scotia, where she specialized in working with small and medium-sized businesses and Indigenous communities. She also supervised and led students in the Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Administration programs through a business consultancy course at Saint Mary’s University.

In addition to her public service and academic roles, Robyn has significant private sector experience, specializing in the management of operations and service delivery. She holds both a Master of Business Administration from Saint Mary’s University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Robyn grew up in Newfoundland and Labrador and now lives in Ottawa with her husband, two young children, and two dogs.
