Canada’s Cyber Security Strategy is Canada’s plan to protect our country from cyber threats. Launched in 2010, theobjectives of the Strategy are to secure government systems, partner to secure vital cyber systems outside the Federal Government andhelp Canadians stay secure online.
The Government of Canada is investing $142.6 million to further advance Canada’s Cyber Security Strategy by funding efforts to secure essential systems outside of the government.
Law Enforcement
This funding will also be used to develop policing expertise to detect and disrupt cybercrime activities through dedicated resources and training. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will establish a dedicated investigative team to combat high-priority cybercrime. The RCMP’s ability to detect and combat cyber-related crime will also be enhanced with proportionate investments in intelligence capacity, technical support and law enforcement training.
Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC)
The funding will be used to provide additional, and enhanced, support for private and critical infrastructure sectors, through increased collaboration and information sharing. This includes a greater capacity for the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) to respond to, and mitigate, cyber incidents in the private sector. Through the development of real-time automated feeds, the private sector will receive additional threat information and faster dissemination.
Regional Resilience Assessment Program
The Regional Resilience Assessment Program (RRAP) is a site assessment program designed to enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure in Canada, such as banking, telecommunications, energy and utilities sectors. This funding will bolster the capacity of the RRAP to incorporate cyber security into the site assessment process. This measure will enable Public Safety Canada to assess the overall cyber security of an organization and provide recommendations to improve resilience.
In addition to the funding to advance Canada’s Cyber Security Strategy, the Government of Canada announced a further $94.4 million for cyber security in the Economic Action Plan 2015.
These initiatives include:
- Protecting Government Systems - $58 million over five years starting in 2015–16 to further protect the Government of Canada’s essential cyber systems and critical infrastructure that help keep Canadians safe and secure.
- Protecting Vital Cyber Systems – $36.4 million over five years starting in 2015–16 to support the Government’s efforts to ensure Canada’s vital cyber systems remain safe and reliable.
The total investment in cyber security for the next five years is $237 million.
