Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, participated in the unveiling of the design for a monument to be constructed in honour of the three Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers who lost their lives in the June 2014 Moncton shootings. Minister Blaney was joined by Parliamentary Secretary Robert Goguen; the Honourable Brian Gallant, Premier of New Brunswick; Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, Commanding Officer, RCMP J Division; and Mayor George LeBlanc, City of Moncton.
On June 4, 2014, RCMP Constables Doug Larche, Dave Ross and Fabrice Gevaudan were tragically killed in the line of duty while protecting the citizens of Moncton from an armed assailant. Constables Éric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were seriously injured. Police officers and emergency first responders involved in this tragic event demonstrated incredible dedication and professionalism in carrying out their duties, and Canadians from across the country shared in the shock and grief with the people of Moncton.
Recognizing the significance of this tragic event in the lives of the citizens of Moncton and the friends and family of the officers, the Government of Canada, Province of New Brunswick, City of Moncton and the RCMP came together to plan a permanent commemorative memorial to the three officers.
