Backgrounder
December 6, 2024
The Elders Housing Complex project in Watson Lake is the result of a collaborative effort between Liard First Nation, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and the Government of Yukon. This initiative aims to provide culturally appropriate housing for Elders, recognizing their essential role in preserving the knowledge and traditions of Liard First Nation.
Key Details:
- Collaboration: The project was made possible through a partnership between Liard First Nation, ISC, and the Government of Yukon.
- Funding: ISC contributed $9 million to the project through a targeted funding stream dedicated to Indigenous housing initiatives. The Government of Yukon, through the Yukon Housing Corporation, provided $810,000 to support the construction.
- Housing Design: The Elders Housing Complex consists of nine one-bedroom independent living units, each offering a safe and comfortable space for Elders to live autonomously. Each unit is equipped with an independent kitchen and other essential facilities to ensure self-sufficiency and convenience. The facility also features a shared indoor communal area designed to foster social connections and community gatherings.
- Architectural Features: The modern design of the complex, in the shape of an arrowhead, was created by Kobayashi + Zedda Architects. The construction contract was awarded to Wildstone Construction Group, which ensured that the housing complex was culturally relevant and sustainable.
- Other various housing projects in Watson Lake supported by ISC: Nearly $5 million in recent funding dedicated to promoting safe, sustainable housing developments within the community, enhancing longer-term residential stability and community well-being.
This, along with other projects, reflects the shared commitment of Indigenous, federal, and territorial governments to address housing needs in Indigenous communities, a meaningful step forward in the call for reconciliation and healing
