Waiver for citizenship requirements

To become a Canadian citizen, you must meet certain requirements when you apply. If you can’t meet a specific requirement, you can request an exemption. This is called a waiver. If your waiver is approved, it means you don’t need to meet that requirement.

You can only request a waiver for

• the citizenship test
• proving your English or French language skills
• the oath of citizenship

If you can meet the requirement but you need help with it, request an accommodation instead.

Accommodation

Examples of an accommodation are:

• other accessible versions of the test, such as Braille, large-print, or oral tests
• extra time to take the test for someone with a disability
• sign language interpretation and wheelchair access at citizenship events (like a ceremony or an interview)
