This information is collected under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations, which replaced the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations on August 24, 2016.

Based on market data, there is overall sufficient supply of cannabis for medical purposes to meet the current needs of registered clients.

Below is a summary of other recent reporting changes:

In the final quarter (Q4) of fiscal year 2017-18, Health Canada began to report:

The amount of dried cannabis and cannabis oil that is authorized by permit to be imported and exported for medical or scientific purposes per month;
The amount of cannabis oil sold to clients in litres (as well as kilograms) per month;
The amount of cannabis oil released for sale to clients in litres (as well as kilograms) per month; and
The total amount of cannabis oil in licensed producers' inventories at end of month in litres (as well as kilograms).

In the second quarter (Q2) of 2017-18 Health Canada began to report:

The cumulative number of health care practitioners who have ever provided a medical document for a client who registered with a licensed producer;
The number of personal/designated registration applications processed per month; and
The number of personal/designated registration application related calls answered in our dedicated call centre.

In the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal year 2017-18 Health Canada began to report:

The total number of client shipments per month by province of residence; and
The total number of medical practitioners per month that provided a medical document for a client who registered with a licensed producer

In addition, in Q1 Health Canada began reporting monthly breakdowns for:

Dried cannabis sales, amounts released for sale, inventory; and
Cannabis oil sales, amounts released for sale, inventory.

Finally, in Q1 Health Canada began reporting the following information by province of residence:

Total number of client registrations with a licensed producer at end of month;
Total number of active registrations for personal and/or designated production at end of month;
Total number of personal producers at end of month; and
Total number of designated producers at end of month.

In October 2016, Health Canada clarified reporting requirements for licensed producers. Licensed producers were asked to report on the amount of cannabis for medical purposes that they have released for sale to clients. This amount includes only product that has been approved for sale to clients (e.g., tested and ready for sale), which may have been produced in either the current or a previous reporting period. As such, this amount excludes product that was produced during the current reporting period and not yet approved for sale (e.g., not yet tested and ready for sale).

This reporting change, beginning with data in Q3 2016-17, allows for a more accurate picture of the volume of supply that is available to registered clients; and, more consistent period-over-period analysis. It also aligns more closely with the inventory tracking practices of the licensed producers. Note: the change does not allow for a direct comparison with previous reporting periods.

In Q3 2016-17, Health Canada also began to report on the number of active registration certificates issued to persons that are authorized to produce a limited amount of cannabis for their own medical purposes, or who have been designated to produce for another person.

Finally, it should be noted that in May 2017, Health Canada implemented a number of improvements to streamline the application process for issuing licences and enabling increased production of cannabis for medical purposes.
