Canada imposes further sanctions against Iran
Backgrounder
Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against Iran by listing 5 Iranian individuals directly responsible for the implementation of Iran’s repressive and discriminatory laws and policies targeted at women, girls and minorities.
Canadian measures
The Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations impose a prohibition on dealings related to the listed individuals, effectively freezing any assets they may have in Canada. Persons in Canada and Canadians outside the country are prohibited from dealing in the property of the listed individuals, and the listed individuals are also rendered inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
The specific prohibitions are set out in the regulations.
The names of the individuals added to the schedule of these regulations are the following:
- Mohammad Mokhber, former first vice president and former caretaker president
- Gholam Hossein Esmaili, former chief of staff of the president
- Seyyed Masoud Mirkazemi, former vice president and head of budget and planning organization
- Siamak Rahpeik, Deputy Secretary of the Guardian Council
- Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Radan, Chief of Law Enforcement Command
