Comment on: Proposed new requirements for reporting Hydrogen Cyanide, Free cyanide, Cyanide salts and Cyanide complexes to the National Pollutant Release Inventory
Current status: closed
This consultation ran from March 1, 2024 to May 14, 2024.
We consulted Canadians about National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting requirements, specifically the lowering of the current threshold for hydrogen cyanide and the addition of a new group called “free cyanide, cyanide salts and cyanide complexes”, which will include 9 substances. Cyanides are most commonly used in the metal mining, iron and steel manufacturing, and ferrocyanide-containing road salts.
Who was the focus of this consultation
The Government of Canada engaged with:
- a multi-stakeholder work group (includes representatives from industry associations, environmental non-government organizations, and Indigenous organizations)
- members of the public
Key questions for dicussion
We proposed to lower the reporting threshold for hydrogen cyanide and add nine substances to a new group called free cyanide, cyanide salts and cyanide complexes. We sought ideas and input around the following topics:
- should NPRI lower the reporting threshold for hydrogen cyanide?
- should NPRI add a new group called free cyanide, cyanide salts and cyanide complexes?
