Offender learning material handling skills through on-the-job training.

On-the-job training is a hands-on method of teaching the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to perform within the workplace. It provides technical skills for particular jobs, as well as skills that are transferable to multiple roles and industries.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) offers on-the-job training to offenders through a variety of employment assignments, for example:

  • CORCAN sites
  • food services
  • institutional services, and
  • grounds and building maintenance

They develop their knowledge and abilities during employment assignments. This teaches them how to effectively do a more specific job while also gaining essential and technical skills that are transferable to other employment types. Through employment assignments offenders also have an opportunity to practice their skills.

Vocational Certificates may compliment on-the-job training. They may also act as stand-alone training courses related to a variety of industries.

At CORCAN sites, offenders learn in an environment that is comparable to the private sector. There, they can continue to learn through on the job while also apply the knowledge and skills obtained during their technical and essential skills training.
