Resident • Pathways

It’s just like a healthy way to live. Before I wasn't thinking about that stuff, I was just thinking about drugs and crime. And then I come here and you go deep into these traditions.

Hi, my name is Heather.

Lifestyle

So being in the Pathways program, it's all about Indigenous lifestyle. I grew up in a white environment. I didn't know anything about my Indigenous background. I never got to experience any of that native stuff. Until I came here and I saw that way of life and it just brought me right into it. And I just want to keep learning more and more to understand more about my culture. There’s lots of supports here, mostly because of the elders. The elders help.

It helps me relate a lot. When I first came to Pathways, I was fragile, I was shy, and I was not in the right mind.

Relate

I was still stuck in that drug culture and crime. And they shared some of their traumas with me and that helped me relate, you know, growing up as a child. And the reason to why you can be better and live a better, successful life. By following these teachings, you can get there.

Teachings

There's the seven sacred teachings that they live by. There's humility, there's truth, love, respect, courage, honesty, and wisdom. And to live by those, it teaches you a different way of life. I've kind of like, I learned who I am. I found out that I have a part of that background that I just never really knew was there.

I think it's gonna make me a new me when I get out there, it for sure is.
