Social Studies

The various aspects of Canada’s correctional system provide a wide variety of issues well suited for sociological analysis: the impact of the socio-economic structures on oneself and others, the benefits of social organizations, and the various ways groups and individuals interact. The “Social Studies” modules enable students to examine their opinions and judgments on social issues and develop a well-informed, critical approach to viewing the world around them.

The Correctional Process

The Correctional Process module provides students with concrete and realistic knowledge of the correctional process, from offence to release. It explains the various stages of offender management and describes a typical day in the life of an inmate.

Conditional Release

The Conditional Release module demystifies the process leading to the reintegration of offenders into the community. Not all inmates are allowed to return to the community; release must be earned gradually.

Helping the Offender

The goal of the Correctional Service of Canada is to safely reintegrate offenders into the community. The Helping the Offender module explains that reintegration must also consider the specific needs of the offender’s family and the community.

From Offender to Responsible Citizen: Learning for Life

Incarceration and supervision alone do not produce the long-term changes that many offenders require in order for them to lead productive, law-abiding lives in the community. The From Offender to Responsible Citizen: Learning for Life module provides an overview of the main programs available within institutions and in the community.

A Program for Every Inmate: Meeting Specific Needs

From the aging population to the specific needs of Aboriginal peoples, women and substance abuse offenders, programs must have the same objective: ensure the safe reintegration of all offenders. A Program for Every Inmate: Meeting Specific Needs explains some of those specific programs.

Helping Victims of Crime

The Helping Victims of Crime module explains how victims can request information and provide input in an inmate’s parole process.
