Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: July 9, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

This week, I wanted to give kudos to the inmates at Beaver Creek and Warkworth Institutions who were recently involved in a CORCAN project with the Department of National Defence. The textiles team at Beaver Creek designed and manufactured new tents for the Canadian Rangers working and living in the Arctic. They received support on this project from the metal shop at Warkworth who fabricated aluminium rods needed to frame the tents.

This project involved consultations with Inuit Elders and Inuit offenders who had experience living in northern Canada. The tents needed to be lightweight as they have to be transported by a Qamutiik (a traditional Inuit wooden sled), but they also needed to be tough enough to withstand the extreme temperatures of northern Canada.

Congratulations to those who worked on this interesting project and contributed their creativity and hard work. CORCAN offers opportunities to participate in interesting projects and if you want to get involved and learn new employability skills, get in touch with the Employment Coordinator at your institution.
