Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: June 17, 2024

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis and to honour their stories, resilience and achievements.

On June 21 we also celebrate National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Let us recognize the rich history and diversity of Indigenous communities across Canada.

It’s also a time to recognize and honour the strength and resilience of our Indigenous staff who work in institutions across the country. They work closely with Indigenous community members and organizations to support Indigenous inmates in our care and custody along their healing paths.

Culturally appropriate support for Indigenous inmates - National Indigenous History Month

Having access to Indigenous culturally appropriate programming and resources is important to your successful rehabilitation and reintegration. Speak with your case management team to learn more about what supports may be available to you at your institution or if you are transitioning to the community.

A number of institutions, particularly in the Prairies, are offering special activities to mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I encourage you to talk with your case management team about what programs or activities may be available to you at your institution.

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” – Chief Seattle
