Commissioner's update for correctional employees: July 9, 2024

This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.

Our Mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. Many of you will take some well-deserved holidays over the next few months. I wish you a wonderful time. It is important to take time to recharge.

Meetings with staff in the Quebec region last week

Last week, I was in the Quebec Region to attend town halls with staff at Donnacona, Drummond, Regional Reception Centre and Archambault Institutions, as well as the Federal Training Centre. I wanted to thank you for welcoming me and taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with me.

I wanted to be there, in person, to thank you for your hard work over the last several weeks with the unprecedented exercise of evacuating Port-Cartier. This effort includes staff at Port-Cartier and all staff at the institutions that had to receive an influx of new inmates on short notice. You’ve demonstrated strong leadership and I appreciate all of your efforts.

The visit was also a good opportunity for me to listen to your perspectives, in general, and hear your concerns about what is important to you. You can always share your perspectives with me on what we are doing well and where we need to do better through our communications team at the email address below:

Criminal Justice Forum for Asia and the Pacific

On June 24 and 25, Brigitte Bouchard, Director General, Women Offenders Sector (WOS) was in Tokyo, Japan, to represent CSC at the Criminal Justice Forum for Asia and the Pacific. She presented to the Working Group on Offender Treatment and Rehabilitation and gave an overview of the profile of women offenders in Canada, CSC’s gender and trauma-based approach to women’s corrections, as well as programs and interventions for women offenders and their public safety results.

Brigitte also took the opportunity to present on the principles of the Creating Choices Report : Empowerment, Meaningful and Responsible Choices, Respect and Dignity, Supportive Environment, and Shared Responsibility – which have guided innovation in women’s corrections for over 30 years. I am proud that Creating Choices is recognized as a model of excellence around the world!
