2 Billion Trees working with provinces and territories
The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program has committed to funding provinces and territories to support planting approximately one billion trees, out of the two billion goal, by 2031.
In order to advance this work, the federal government is signing Agreements in Principle (AiPs) with provinces and territories. The AiPs demonstrate a shared commitment in setting foundational principles for tree planting projects taking place on provincial and territorial Crown lands. These principles include enhancement of biodiversity, habitat restoration, carbon sequestration, permanency of forest cover, and monitoring.
AiPs are developed by federal, provincial and territorial governments, and informed by program stakeholders, including the co-chairs of the external Nature Based Climate Solutions Advisory Committee.
The Government of Canada is committed to transparency on the progress of the 2 Billion Trees commitment and to working with provinces and territories to support tree planting. These AiPs are the first step toward negotiating contribution agreements with each province or territory for tree planting projects.
The signed AiPs are listed in the following section. As other AiPs become available, this web page will be updated.
