Employment Program “Significant Steps” for Indigenous Talent

As the Department of National Defence (DND) celebrate National Indigenous History Month 2024, they are also launching an employment-boosting program to enhance career development for Indigenous Peoples.

To support the retention of Indigenous employees, DND is introducing the Indigenous Career Navigator Program (ICNP), which offers personalized support and guidance on professional development, empowering them to navigate their career journeys with confidence and clarity.

The ICNP is part of DND’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and answers to the Call to Action on Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion in the Federal Public Service issued by the Privy Council Office in 2021.

The ICNP offers a range of tailored services designed to meet the unique needs of Indigenous employees, from mentorship programs to skill development workshops. This program also allows members to join a vibrant community of Indigenous professionals dedicated to supporting one another and to drive positive change within the department. The ICNP aims to create a better understanding of Indigenous cultures through a collaborative education for all, which is a key element of reconciliation and inclusiveness.

The INCP initiative is led by the Knowledge Circle for Indigenous Inclusion, one of several organizations focused on employment diversity, equity, and inclusion in the federal public service. It is open to Indigenous public servants within DND, including students and eligible CAF members and veterans.

Lieutenant-General Jocelyn Paul, Commander Canadian Army and DND Champion for Indigenous Peoples, was among those consulted as the INCP was developed to continue beyond the Internal  Indigenous Support Program, where a pool of Indigenous candidates was created for numerous AS positions.

“These are not just a step towards inclusion,” he said, “they are significant steps towards a stronger Defence Team with a more diverse range of experience and knowledge.”
