The Government of Canada is launching a “tell us once” approach for online direct deposit payments
News Release
February 14, 2018
The Government of Canada continues to work to provide Canadians with high-quality service that will help them manage their tax and benefits online, anytime and anywhere. It will now be easier for Canadians to update and share their direct deposit banking information quickly and safely between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
Today, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, jointly announced the first step in a “tell us once” approach when providing banking information to the Government of Canada.
The new Direct Deposit Sharing Initiative is a consent-based service that allows Canada Pension Plan (CPP) recipients to update their direct deposit banking information when using the CRA’s My Account, MyCRA mobile web app, or ESDC’s My Service Canada Account. With consent, only their banking information will be shared between both organizations. Sharing this information will ensure that CPP recipients receive their CPP payments and other benefits promptly by direct deposit.
Through the Linked Accounts service, Canadians will also be able to access the CRA’s My Account and ESDC’s My Service Canada Account. This self-service option lets individuals access and update their personal information and undertake a full range of transactions in one single, secure login session.
CRA and ESDC are the Government of Canada’s largest service delivery providers, who together manage over 100 million interactions with Canadians every year. Through this new initiative, we are helping Canadians find easy and convenient ways to share their banking information in order to receive the benefits to which they are entitled.
