April 1 to June 30, 2024: Quarterly progress report on the Centre Block project
We’re restoring and modernizing the Centre Block. We’re also designing and building the Parliament Welcome Centre. It's the largest and most complex heritage rehabilitation ever seen in Canada. We estimate the cost to be between $4.5 billion and $5 billion. We aim to complete construction between 2030 and 2031. The Centre Block will reopen about 1 year later. This will allow Parliament to do testing and get the building ready for operations.

Project health

Construction progress
Current construction activities for the Centre Block project.
Parliament Welcome Centre
With the last part of the mass excavation complete, contractors are mobilizing to start building the structure of the Parliament Welcome Centre this fall.

Centre Block: Interior
We continue to make progress to separate the building from its foundation by placing it on support posts. This includes rebuilding the structure of level 1 and installing support posts in the basement.
Basement support posts: 63% complete
Centre Block: Exterior
Stonemasons continue to repair the stones on the east and west façades. We started installing scaffolding in the courtyards to support the upcoming reconstruction of the roof.

North façade: 100% complete
Cost update
Spending to date on the Centre Block project is at about $896 million.
The overall budget was established based on a cost report completed in 2021. The report was provided by an independent consultant who validated the method we used to establish cost for the construction.

Project spotlight
Each quarter, we highlight an element of work being done on the Centre Block or the Parliament Welcome Centre.
New tower cranes on Parliament Hill
This fall we look forward to starting the next phase of the Parliament Welcome Centre. After removing about 44,000 truckloads of rock to dig the 23-metre-deep hole in front of Centre Block, we will be ready to fill it back with the new underground structure.
Big changes will be visible starting this fall as we install new tower cranes in the construction site to help move construction materials and equipment. These tower cranes are between 50 and 70 metres tall, but will look much shorter as their bases will be at the bottom of the excavation hole. Smaller concrete placing boom towers will also be installed on-site to assist with the pouring of low-carbon concrete.
