LHHR: 2017 Elections - Political Activities of Employees (17-05)

2017-06-27

Note: The following message was sent to deputy heads on June 27, 2017.

In 2017, various elections will be held across Canada at the provincial and municipal levels. In view of these upcoming elections, I am providing you with a communiqué to share with your employees. It explains that, while employees have a right to engage in political activities, they need to be politically impartial in their duties as public servants and be perceived as such. The communiqué also provides employees with guidance to make informed decisions about their participation in political activities.

As a deputy head, the only political activity that you are permitted by the Public Service Employment Act is to vote in federal, provincial, territorial and municipal elections.

Should you or your Designated Political Activities Representative require additional information or assistance with your communications efforts, please contact Natalie Jones, Director General, Political Activities and Non-Partisanship Directorate, at 819-420-6453.

Your leadership is essential in ensuring a professional and non-partisan public service. Thank you for your ongoing collaboration.
