Biography - Susan M. W. Cartwright, Commissioner

Susan Cartwright retired from the federal public service in March 2012 after 31 years of public service during which she gained a broad range of management, policy, project, communications and program experience.

From July 2009 until her retirement, Ms. Cartwright held the position of Senior Advisor to the Privy Council Office, to lead the legislative review of the Public Service Modernization Act and prepare a report, which was tabled in Parliament in 2011. Prior to that appointment, Ms. Cartwright had held positions of Foreign and Defence Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister and Deputy Secretary to Cabinet at the Privy Council Office and, before that, Associate Deputy Minister at Health Canada.
Ms. Cartwright previously held various positions at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, from 2003-2006, during which time she also led the development of the Federal Accountability Act. From 2002 to 2003 she held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy, at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This followed a 21 year career in the Foreign Service, during which she served in five overseas postings and in a variety of positions in Ottawa at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

Ms. Cartwright holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Victoria and a master’s degree from the University of Waterloo. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, and of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, and Chair of the Governance, Nominating and Ethics Committee of the Board of Trustees of the National Arts Centre. She was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016, and received the public service’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012. She has also been awarded the Canada 125 Medal and the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals.

She lives in Ottawa and Perth, Ontario and is married to Nick Daniel.
