Number of cases of shigellosis in Canada
In recent years, approximately 880 cases of shigellosis have been reported annually in Canada.
How Canada monitors shigellosis
Canada uses different surveillance systems to monitor cases of food-borne illness. These include:
- FoodNet Canada
- PulseNet Canada
- the National Enteric Surveillance Program (NESP)
- the Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System
Shigellosis is a nationally notifiable disease in all provinces and territories. Cases are reported to:
- provincial or territorial departments of health
- the federal government, if they meet the national case definition
