December 6 - Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Statement
Remembering and acting to end violence against women
December 6 is a day of national tragedy in Canada. Twenty-six years ago, 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were violently killed because they were women. I join all Canadians today, in solemnly remembering these women and the survivors from this tragedy, on what is now known as the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Working with federal, provincial and territorial government colleagues, non-government organizations across the country and caring citizens like you, we can take action to stop violence against girls and women. And we can help those that are survivors of violent acts.
I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the resources available to help professionals, families and communities prevent and address family and intimate partner violence. Resources are also available to help those recovering and in need of support.
Far too many women and girls face violent behaviours and actions on a daily basis. Together, let’s take a stand by creating greater awareness through learning and talking about this problem, and by supporting survivors as they engage on their road to recovery. Working together, we can make a safer environment for future generations.
The Honourable Dr. Jane Philpott
Minister of Health
