Meet Katia Khatchadourian, Manager, Network Partner Programs Policy

Katia joined PrairiesCan in February 2022 as a Senior Business Officer in Policy and Strategic Direction (PSD) based in our Edmonton headquarters. In June 2023 she transitioned to her current role as Manager, Network Partner Programs Policy, PSD, where she leads a team that provides leadership and support in the analysis, evaluation and development of program and policy strategy for the Prairies Business Services Network (PBSN). PBSN is a network of nearly 80 organizations supported by PrairiesCan to provide business information and assistance, planning and implementation of community economic growth initiatives and loans to small- and medium-sized businesses.

Katia’s path to PrairiesCan

Before joining the federal public service, Katia’s career was spent working in the private sector, particularly in hospitality, tourism, and the food industry. These experiences helped her build critical skills in leadership, strategic planning, and team building. “It was a natural transition into the public sector,” Katia explains. “Working in economic development has given me the opportunity to be a conduit to the local business community and contribute to creating local economic opportunities.” Her private sector background has shaped her approach to her work, instilling a collaborative mindset and a passion for helping entrepreneurs thrive.

A memorable project at PrairiesCan

One of Katia’s most rewarding projects is her current work on the Prairies Business Services Network partner programs and reporting portal. This initiative is part of the Government of Canada’s Digital Ambition project and aims to streamline data management and program reporting. Katia is proud of how her small team is creating significant impact by making processes more efficient. “Part of the work includes streamlining program indicators as part of a leaning exercise to avoid resource-intensive, manual processes,” she explains. The initiative ensures smoother delivery and a more responsive approach to supporting PrairiesCan’s partners.

Career advice from Katia

For those looking to start a career in the Government of Canada, Katia’s advice is simple: “Learn French! It is honestly the best investment you can make in yourself and will provide you with a wider pool of opportunities.” She also emphasizes the passion that exists within the economic development space. “Be ready to engage with passionate employees. The work here gives you a chance to make a real impact.”

Katia's favorite aspect of working at PrairiesCan is the supportive and collaborative culture. “PrairiesCan has an outstanding culture with a strong sense of community, support, and unified purpose,” she shares. This sense of connection drives her motivation to make a difference in the Prairies and beyond.

Katia, beyond the office

Outside of work, Katia is passionate about running and fitness. “And FOOD! I am a huge foodie,” she adds. Beyond her love for fitness and culinary experiences, Katia also shared some fun facts: she’s a twin and used to have a career in acting for film and television!
