November 30, 2017                     Ingonish, Nova Scotia                  Parks Canada Agency

Parks Canada and Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design are pleased to announce that Amélie Jérôme has been chosen as the Artist in Residence in Cape Breton Highlands National Park this fall.

Ms. Jérôme is an abstract painter from Montreal. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts from York University. She has participated in eight group exhibitions and has held four solo exhibitions over the last several years.

Amélie Jérôme is spending six weeks in Cape Breton Highlands National Park using the natural surroundings and setting as inspiration to create visual art.

The Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for a professional artist to focus for a concentrated period on developing new projects, or to work on existing projects within quiet, natural surroundings. The program includes a public access component that provides an opportunity for the public to see the artist at work. In this case, Amélie Jérôme will have an open studio day on Friday, December 8th, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 49 Franey Road in Ingonish Beach. The public and local artists are invited to meet her and learn about her art.

Parks Canada is responsible for protecting and presenting nationally significant examples of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. Through its broad network of national parks, marine conservation areas, and national historic sites, Parks Canada connects Canadians with their heritage. Programs such as Artist in Residence, provide unique ways for residents and visitors to learn more about Parks Canada’s special places.

Quotes

“Parks Canada and Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design share a common interest in providing visitors and the public with the opportunity to experience and connect with visual arts in a national park setting. We’re proud to work with the Centre to implement an Artist in Residence project in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.”

Blair Pardy,
Superintendent, Parks Canada, Cape Breton Field Unit

"It is important to provide artists with the opportunity for time and space away from their usual environment to allow for creative exploration and experimentation. Our partnership with Parks Canada is critical to providing artists with the space for meaningful creative practice. The setting of Cape Breton Highlands National Park emphasizes immersion into a natural landscape that is both inspiring and conducive to artistic creation. The Centre looks forward to building upon this program with Parks Canada."

Lori Burke,
Executive Director, Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design

“It’s a great privilege to have been selected for this new residency program, which distinguishes itself by being so closely affiliated with Parks Canada. As a lover and keen observer of nature, I already had the opportunity to go hiking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and learn more about its trails, wildlife, and ecosystems. The beauty of my surroundings is very inspiring, and the quality of time and solitude it affords allows me to develop a strong new body of work.”
