June 30, 2016 St. John’s, NL Parks Canada Agency
Today, the 1835 Cape Spear Lighthouse was formally designated as a heritage lighthouse under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, Mr. Lorne Wheeler, was at Cape Spear today along with other members of the Board to unveil a plaque commemorating the designation.
The Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act provides an opportunity for Canadians to actively engage in the recognition and protection of historic lighthouses that have been such important symbols to Canada’s culture, heritage and identity. Cape Spear Lighthouse is one of 76 lighthouses from across Canada to be designated since the Act was adopted in 2008, with more designations to come.
Lighthouses designated under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act are protected from unauthorized alteration or disposition and must be conserved in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.
