OTTAWA, May 26, 2015 - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, commended law enforcement agencies following the arrest of Phuc Doan Nguyen and Luis Alberto Simas who were featured on the “Wanted by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)” list.
Nguyen is inadmissible to Canada for serious criminality for multiple convictions of possession of property obtained by crime and theft. He was also convicted of breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offence, discharging a firearm, and possession of instruments for breaking into coin devices. Simas is inadmissible to Canada for serious criminality following a conviction for robbery and he was also convicted of assault and breaking and entering.
“I would like to recognize the Toronto Immigration Task Force and the Toronto Police Service who executed the arrests of two individuals who were deemed inadmissible to Canada based on their crimes. These arrests would not have been possible without close cooperation between the Canada Border Services Agency and our police forces.
To date, as a result of the “Wanted by the CBSA” program, Canadians have assisted in locating 62 individuals in Canada, of whom 53 have been removed. Additionally, 18 other individuals have been located abroad.
Our Government is keeping our streets and communities safe, we will not allow Canada to be used as a safe haven for foreign criminals. We have acted on this commitment by introducing the Removal of Serious Foreign Criminals Act, which will eliminate barriers to the removal of foreign criminals convicted of committing serious crimes in Canada.”
