December 1, 2014
December 1 is World AIDS Day, a global opportunity to unite efforts to reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS and support the men, women and children living with or affected by this disease, and to remember those who have died.
Canada is committed to supporting collaboration, research, innovation and building capacity, at home and globally, to address HIV/AIDS. Through the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada and the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative, the Government of Canada is investing more than $86 million this year alone and some $700 million since 2006 as part of its broader efforts to address HIV and AIDS.
In Canada, HIV/AIDS remains a public health challenge affecting vulnerable populations with stigmatization and discrimination creating barriers to testing, prevention, treatment, care and support. Working collectively we can find innovative ways to address HIV and related sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, including holistic approaches that address mental health, stigma, ageing and associated chronic diseases.
Last year the Public Health Agency of Canada released its HIV Screening and Testing Guide to health care providers across Canada because including testing as part of routine medical care fosters a positive testing environment that reduces stigma and discrimination. Being aware enables individuals to access available treatment and take steps to prevent the spread of infection.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a global problem that requires a global solution and strong collaborative international effort. While attending the International AIDS Conference in Australia this summer, I was heartened to see so many countries, organizations and individuals coming together to prevent the spread of HIV and care for those living with HIV and AIDS.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the many Canadians who expend time, energy and expertise on this issue. Through your continued support and efforts I confidently look forward to realizing our shared goal of a generation free from HIV/AIDS.
The Honourable Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health
