New inscriptions recognize Canada’s brave men and women—past, present, and future

November 10, 2014 – Ottawa – Veterans Affairs Canada

The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced that the Government of Canada will rededicate the National War Memorial as part of the annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence will participate in this significant occasion.

The inscription, In Service to Canada / Au service du Canada, will be added to the Memorial to formally recognize all Canadians who served in the past, who serve today, and who will serve in the future. The Memorial will also be inscribed with the dates of the Afghanistan mission and the South African War.

Quick Facts

The National War Memorial was unveiled by King George VI on May 21, 1939, to commemorate the First World War. It was rededicated on May 29, 1982, by Governor General Edward Schreyer to also commemorate the Second World War and the Korean War.
Also known as "The Response," the National War Memorial originally commemorated the response of Canadians in the First World War. Represented by uniformed figures from all services passing through a granite arch, there was to be no suggestion of glorifying war, but rather a depiction of Canada’s response to the threat against world peace and freedom.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, will join Canadians in marking anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars, including the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial.
