October 31, 2014 – Lévis, Quebec – Infrastructure Canada
Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament for Lévis—Bellechasse, the Honourable Steven Blaney, on behalf of the Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, the Honourable Denis Lebel, and the Minister of Tourism, Minister responsible for Chaudière—Appalaches Region, and Member of the National Assembly for Bellechasse, Dominique Vien, on behalf of Pierre Moreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy for the Government of Quebec, are pleased to announce that 30 municipalities in the Chaudière—Appalaches Region will receive $64,169,133 over the next five years under the new federal-provincial Gas Tax Fund agreement and from the Government of Quebec's contribution for the completion of priority infrastructure projects. This in addition to the $101,364,361 going to the 106 other Chaudière—Appalaches communities.
Under the federal Gas Tax Fund and the contribution from the Government of Quebec, financial support for municipal infrastructure in Quebec will amount to $2.67 billion over the next five years.
The federal Gas Tax Fund provides long-term, stable and predictable funding to help Canadian municipalities build and revitalize their local infrastructure while creating jobs and promoting long-term prosperity. The funding has been extended and the amount allocated has doubled, increasing from $1 billion to $2 billion per year. It has also been indexed at 2% per year and legislated as a permanent source of federal infrastructure funding for municipalities.
"Thanks to the new Canada-Quebec Gas Tax Fund Agreement, the provincial ridings of Bellechasse, Lévis and Chute-de-la-Chaudière now have access to a flexible, reliable and predictable source of funding for upgrades to drinking water and wastewater facilities, local roads and public transit, as well as community, cultural, and sports and leisure infrastructure projects."
- Dominique Vien, Member of the National Assembly for Bellechasse, on behalf of Pierre Moreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy for the Government of Quebec
