Minister Moore attends Afghanistan Memorial Vigil in Fredericton, NB

October 1, 2014 - OTTAWA

Today, the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for New Brunswick and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), attended the Afghanistan Memorial Vigil commemoration in Fredericton, New Brunswick. These cross-country commemorations give all Canadians the opportunity to salute the fallen, honour the currently serving members and veterans, celebrate the strength of Canada’s remarkable military families and pay tribute to all who participated in Canada’s 12-year mission in Afghanistan.

Following the event at the Fredericton Convention Centre, the vigil was relocated to the Centennial Building, 670 King Street, where it will be available for public viewing from October 2^nd to 4^th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

The Afghanistan Memorial Vigil remembers and honours those who have fallen in Afghanistan. It also acknowledges the bravery, dedication, valour, and professionalism of all members of the CAF, the U.S. Armed Forces, and those who have served and supported the mission.
More than 40,000 CAF members deployed to Afghanistan, making the military engagement the largest deployment of CAF personnel since the Second World War.
The Vigil displays 192 plaques that were formerly part of the Kandahar Air Field cenotaph. The cenotaph was a memorial structure for Canadian soldiers to commemorate their fallen comrades while deployed in Afghanistan.
The plaques represent 158 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel, a Canadian diplomat, a Department of National Defence contractor, a Canadian journalist who was embedded with the CAF and more than 40 United States Armed Forces members who were under Canadian command during operations in Afghanistan.
