OTTAWA, May 6, 2014 - Following the tabling of the 2014 spring report of the Auditor General of Canada, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement:
“I am fully confident that Public Safety Canada and Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are addressing the findings and recommendations of the Office of the Auditor General.
The First Nations Policing Program (FNPP) has had a tangible impact on the safety and security of First Nation and Inuit communities. In March 2013, the federal government committed $612.4 million in funding over five years to renew agreements under the FNPP. Public Safety Canada continues to work with partners to finalize multi-year agreements to support dedicated, responsive, and professional policing services in First Nation and Inuit communities through this stable, long-term funding.
Correctional Service of Canada works continuously to effectively accommodate the inmate population, as outlined in its Accommodation Plan for 2013-2018, and is committed to managing federal offenders safely and effectively.”
