Federally-funded research program to fight terrorism

Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced the successful recipients of $1.5 million in funding through the Kanishka Project.
The nine projects receiving funding under this round of the Kanishka Project will provide valuable contributions towards improving our awareness and knowledge of terrorism and radicalization to violence. These projects cover a range of issues, from identifying factors that help youth to resist violent extremism to examining the long-term psychological impacts that follow an act of terrorism.
On June 23, 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the Kanishka Project, an innovative $10 million research initiative named after the Air India Flight 182 plane that was bombed on June 23, 1985, killing 329 people, most of them Canadians. Research supported by the project will help to secure additional information on terrorism in the Canadian context and produce more effective policies, tools and resources for law enforcement and people on the front lines.
Canada’s Counter-terrorism Strategy sets out how the Government as a whole organizes its efforts to prevent, detect, deny and respond to the threat of terrorism, and provides a framework to guide future efforts. The success of the Strategy relies on strong partnerships with experts in different fields, including the academic community. As part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to prevent individuals from engaging in terrorism, the Kanishka Project strives to create a vibrant network of scholars that will inform more effective policies for preventing and countering terrorism.
