OTTAWA, Ontario, April 30, 2014 – Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, commended the Sûreté du Québec and their partners including, Canada Border Services Agency, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations, on their efforts in dismantling a significant cross-border contraband tobacco smuggling ring.
“Tobacco smuggling contributes to the proliferation of organized crime and poses a serious threat to the safety of Canadians, our communities and our economy. I commend the vigilant work of CBSA and RCMP officers involved in this investigation. These seizures and arrests are a testament to the collaborative efforts of our law enforcement partners and our Government’s staunch commitment to stopping organized crime and those who attempt to undermine our laws by trafficking contraband goods across our border.”
