Minister MacKay announces Disaster Assistance Funding of $3.6 million provided to Nova Scotia

February 7, 2014 - Halifax, NS

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced a final payment of $3.6 million in federal funding under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) program for costs incurred by the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Province of Nova Scotia was subjected to a severe snowstorm (White Juan) in February 2004. Roads, schools, businesses and government offices were closed for several days and required the declaration of a provincial state of emergency to ensure public safety and facilitate snow removal from highways and streets.

Minister MacKay made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

Since its inception in 1970, the DFAA has provided more than $2.6 billion in disaster financial assistance to the provinces and territories.
When response and recovery costs exceed what individual provinces or territories could reasonably be expected to bear on their own, the DFAA provide the Government of Canada with a fair and equitable means of assisting provincial and territorial governments.
Following a large natural disaster, repair and reconstruction can take a significant time to complete and document. After the approval of federal financial assistance under the DFAA, provinces may request an advance, interim payment or final payment which requires the submission of the expenditure documentation for federal audit. Once a review of the federal audit is completed, payment is issued.
