Lakeshore, Ontario, April 12, 2013 – Families in Lakeshore and the surrounding region are now one step closer to having a new multi-use recreational facility.
Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs; the Honourable Teresa Piruzza, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor West; and His Worship Tom Bain, Mayor of the Town of Lakeshore, gathered today to celebrate the start of construction of Lakeshore's Multi-Use Recreational Facility, a major recreation complex that will help revitalize the community and support active and healthy lifestyles.
The complex will include an arena with three ice pads, a gymnasium, an aquatic centre, an indoor walking track, seven outdoor soccer fields and a five-kilometre, multi-purpose outdoor trail for walking, running, cycling and skateboarding. In addition, a library, several community rooms and meeting space will help bring the community together.

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to $17.3 million towards the facility's total eligible costs. The federal share will come from the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund. Federal funding is conditional on the project meeting all of the requirements under the Building Canada Fund and the signing of a contribution agreement. The Town of Lakeshore will be responsible for all remaining costs. The total estimated cost of the new multi-use recreational facility is $57.1 million.
Canada's Economic Action Plan 2013 is delivering a New Building Canada Plan to build roads, bridges, subways, commuter rail, and other public infrastructure in cooperation with provinces, territories, and municipalities. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 898,000 net new jobs created since July 2009. The New Building Canada Plan, combined with other federal infrastructure investments, supports Canada's infrastructure advantage, a key enabler of economic growth and job creation.
These investments support Building Together, the Government of Ontario's long-term infrastructure plan to repair, rebuild and renew the province's roads and highways, bridges, public transit, schools and postsecondary institutions, hospitals and courthouses. Since 2003, Ontario has invested approximately $75 billion in infrastructure. Building modern, efficient infrastructure has created or preserved close to 100,000 jobs each year, on average, making Ontario's economy more productive and improving quality of life, now and in the future.
