Today, Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding under the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) to the Manitoba Cardiac Institute (Reh-Fit) Foundation for upgrades to Winnipeg’s Reh-Fit Centre, Canada’s first and only certified medical fitness facility providing cardiac rehabilitation, stroke recovery and fall prevention programming.
“The Reh-Fit centre is a reputable Winnipeg fitness facility visited by thousands of people each year looking to improve their health and wellness,
” said MP Bateman. “I am proud of our Government’s investment, which will help improve the services offered at the centre, and contribute to our community’s long-term growth and prosperity.
”
Over $184,000 in federal funding is going towards resurfacing safety exits; repairs to the steam rooms and men’s shower area; upgrading the lighting in the weight area; and site work to improve vehicle access. The work completed as a result of this investment will improve accessibility, safety, and comfort for visitors.
“Funding under Western Economic Diversification’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund is supporting important improvements to the Reh-Fit Centre,
” said Sue Boreskie, Chief Executive Officer. “This investment is helping to make the centre safer and more accessible, and is supporting essential improvements to the building. As a non-profit this means that we can focus our energy on offering life changing programs that help people in our community lead healthier and more active lives. The whole community is benefitting from this funding.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
