(Calgary, Alberta) – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police offers a challenging, exciting, and rewarding career to those who want to make a difference in their communities and across Canada. The RCMP is always recruiting and we are looking for people from all walks of life to join Canada’s national police service.
As part of the RCMP’s recruiting efforts, Northwest Region Recruiting in partnership with the RCMP Academy, “Depot” Division, is sending 32 high-school students from across three provinces and two territories to the second annual youth camp for one week in August.
Due to the incredible success of last year’s inaugural camp, attended by 16 high school students from Alberta, this year’s Camp has been expanded to include students from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Furthermore, this year’s camp has doubled in size to include 32 students.
The students were selected based on academic achievement and their interest in a career in policing. They will learn what it’s like to be a police officer in training through observation of, and participation in, activities including drill, driver simulation training, firearms, and tours of the RCMP Academy and the RCMP Heritage Centre.
The 32 students selected for the Depot Youth Camp are reflective of the typical RCMP cadet troops. Essentially, this means the students are a co-ed group that represents the Canadian mosaic. At the end of the week-long camp, students will have developed a good understanding of what life would be like as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and they will have had the unique opportunity to experience life as a cadet even before they submit an application to join the ranks of the RCMP.
“It was an incredible experience to be part of last year’s first-ever Depot Youth Camp and I am thrilled that we have doubled this year’s youth camp and expanded it to include three provinces and two territories,” said Cst. PJ DEMURIAK, a member of the Alberta RCMP recruiting team, and one of the recruiters who helped create and grow the Depot Youth Camp. “The RCMP offers more than 150 different types of careers, so regardless of a person’s background, there is a career for everyone who becomes a member of our prestigious and long-standing organization.”
The camp runs from August 13 through August 17, 2012. Recruiters from the participating provinces and territories and instructors from the RCMP Academy will join the students and act as mentors, teachers, and role models throughout the duration of the Camp and beyond.

As part of the RCMP's Recruiting efforts, the Northwest Region Recruiting units in Calgary, Lethbridge, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Yellowknife, and Iqaluit in partnership with the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan, are making it possible for 32 high-school students from various communities across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut to attend a youth camp for one week, at the RCMP Academy from August 13th - 17th, 2012. Students were selected based on their academic achievement and their interest in a career in policing or other related fields of work. These students will learn what it's like to be a RCMP member-in-training through observing and participating in many activities including:
- Drill Class - Basic marching as a troop, expectations of living quarters and kit upkeep, attention to detail, and professionalism.
- Police Defensive Tactics - Hands on application of stances, pain sensitive areas, handcuffing, and use of OC spray (which is inert for practice purposes).
- Fitness - PARE (Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation) preparation and a chance to try it out, lecture on fitness and nutrition/lifestyle, cardio and weight classes.
- Firearms - Use of virtual range (with no actual firing of live ammunition).
- Driving Simulator - Demonstration of the system and a chance to experience driving simulation.
- Advanced Driving Track - Demonstration (as a passenger in a police vehicle, with a facilitator) of the advanced driving track, with the possibility of being able to drive the track if participants have a driver’s license.
- Recruiting - Career presentation and how to prepare for the RPAT (RCMP entrance exam), RMSI (selection interview) and PEP-Q (Pre-Employment Questionnaire).
- Troop Graduation - Observing the traditional graduation parade as well as the marching display of the graduating troop in the famous RCMP uniform, the Red Serge.
- RCMP Heritage Centre - Displays the proud history of the RCMP, our roots and where we are going in the future.
- Senior Troop-in-Training - An opportunity for students to ask a senior troop in training about life at Depot.
While at camp, students will be issued RCMP uniform kit to wear, including a duty belt, uniform pants, and an RCMP t-shirt. In addition to this uniform, they will be expected to act as a troop-in-training by being up early, keeping their dorms clean and in order, and behaving professionally as a representative of the RCMP.
