Ottawa, Ontario, June 27, 2012 – The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is consolidating addictions research activities, so the Addictions Research Centre (ARC) in Montague, Prince Edward Island will close. This measure is expected to save Canadian taxpayers $1.6 million dollars.
The ARC was established in 1999 to advance the research of addiction issues within the criminal justice environment.
CSC remains committed to providing effective programming to offenders with addictions issues. Research activities will be centralized at CSC’s National Headquarters rather than maintaining two separate sites. This will ensure this function is maintained in a way that maximizes resources while saving Canadian taxpayers money.
CSC is committed to doing its part to support the federal government’s return to a balanced budget, reduce the deficit, and deliver on its commitments to Canadians. The Government of Canada – through the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Health Canada and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, for example – provides funding that will continue studies on substance abuse and addictions issues.
The ARC will be decommissioned over the coming two years. Support will be provided to any affected employees to assist them in finding suitable employment.
