OTTAWA – On May 23 and 24, 2012, INTERPOL Ottawa will be hosting for the first time, the INTERPOL Notices Advisory Group (NAG) Meeting. The Notices Program is one of INTERPOL’s core functions. INTERPOL Notices are international alerts allowing police in member countries to share critical information pertaining to wanted persons, international fugitives and missing persons.
The NAG Meeting is an opportunity for INTERPOL member countries in attendance to make recommendations with the view of improving the Notices Program.
The INTERPOL NAG meets twice annually to discuss the INTERPOL Notices Program. INTERPOL Ottawa has been an active member and contributor to the NAG since its creation in 2007 and regularly attends these meetings. This is the first time that the NAG will be held off of the European Continent. In addition to INTERPOL Ottawa, there will be eleven other INTERPOL member countries in attendance along with representation from INTERPOL General Secretariat.
Working with INTERPOL member countries that are part of the NAG is a major priority for the RCMP. “INTERPOL Ottawa is pleased to host the INTERPOL Notices Advisory Group Meeting for the first time.” said Inspector Glenn Martindale, Director of RCMP INTERPOL Ottawa. “The RCMP is Canada’s police force and our involvement in the Notices Program has demonstrated successes. For example, Operation SharQ, which began in 2009, led to 15 Red Notices being issued which in turn contributed to 14 arrests.”
Currently, there are approximately 42,000 active Notices on the INTERPOL General Secretariat’s database. In 2011, INTERPOL Ottawa alone issued 50 Notices demonstrating that the Notices Program is an essential aspect of maintaining security in Canada and abroad.
