Ottawa, October 26, 2011 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize Diwali:
Today, Hindus in Canada and around the world will begin to celebrate Diwali, one of the most important Hindu holidays.
Also known as the “Festival of Lights,” it is a celebration of the ultimate triumph of good over evil, which is marked by the lighting of diyas, and by sharing sweets and snacks with family and friends.
Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists around the world also observe this special holiday.
In Canada, Diwali is an opportunity for Canadians of all faiths and cultural backgrounds to take part in local festivities, such as fireworks displays, gift-giving and by enjoying traditional foods.
By bringing together people of different faiths and cultural communities, and by spreading a message of peace and friendship, it is a celebration that can serve to strengthen our country.
As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I want to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes for a happy Diwali to all those celebrating today and in the days ahead.
Namaste.
