OTTAWA, ONTARIO, December 3, 2010 - In conjunction with International Volunteer Day on December 5, the Government of Canada recognizes the efforts of volunteers nationwide who generously give their time and talents to enhance the quality of life for Canadians of all ages.
"I applaud all volunteers from across Canada who take the time to volunteer in their communities," said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. "Volunteers are the backbone of Canada, and their contributions make communities stronger."
According to the June 2009 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, almost half of all Canadians (46 percent) volunteer their time. Volunteers contribute 166 hours each on average, for a total of over 2 billion hours annually, the equivalent of over 1 million full-time jobs.
The 2010 Speech from the Throne announced the establishment of a prime ministerial award for volunteerism to recognize the enormous contribution volunteers make to Canada. Further details about the new award will be announced in early 2011.
