Ottawa, Ontario (October 30, 2009) - The following statement was released today by the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, on the election of Guy Lonechild as Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations:
“I am pleased to offer my congratulations to the new Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Chief Guy Lonechild.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations plays a leading role in improving the lives of the 74 First Nations communities it represents. I am looking forward to working with Chief Guy Lonechild to address the challenges that affect their quality of life. I cannot stress enough the importance of cooperation and collaboration to enhance social and economic development in First Nations communities. For example, Canada recently signed an agreement with Saskatchewan and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to establish an interim process on Jordan's Principle that will ensure First Nation children with multiple disabilities receive the services and care they require in a timely fashion.
I also wish to acknowledge the leadership of outgoing Chief Lawrence Joseph, and commend him for his dedication and longstanding involvement with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.”
