Gary Doer has been Premier of Manitoba since October 5, 1999, making him Canada’s longest-serving current Premier.
Mr. Doer was first elected to represent the Manitoba riding of Concordia in 1986 and has served as its Member of the Legislative Assembly ever since. In addition to Mr. Doer’s service as Premier, he has served as Minister of Urban Affairs, Minister of Crown Investments, Minister responsible for the Telephone Act, and Minister responsible for the Accountability of Crown Corporations and the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission.
As Premier, Mr. Doer has overseen a balanced budget every year of his administration. He has been recognized by Business Week magazine as one of the Top 20 leaders on climate change and clean energy development.
Before entering politics, Mr. Doer served as President of the Manitoba Government Employees Association.
He was also involved in community activities that included the Manitoba Special Olympics, the Board of Directors of the community-owned Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba.
Mr. Doer was born and raised in Winnipeg. He is married to Ginny Devine, with whom he has two daughters.
