OTTAWA, March 7, 2007 -- The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), today appointed Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire as a member of the Council.
"SSHRC, which comprises Council members from the academic, public and private sectors, continues to support and promote university research and training in key social areas," said Minister Bernier. "I welcome Ms. Thibodeau-DeGuire as she joins this Council, representing public sector interests and I look forward to seeing SSHRC's continued work in providing researchers with the tools needed to fuel research in the social sciences and humanities."
Since 1991, Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire has been President and Executive Director, Centraide of Greater Montreal. Prior to joining Centraide, Ms. Thibodeau-DeGuire worked for numerous years as a structural engineer. She also served as the public relations manager for École Polytechnique.
Ms. Thibodeau-DeGuire has earned numerous distinctions over the years. She was welcomed into the Academy of Great Montrealers, became a member of the Order of Canada and was appointed Knight of the National Order of Quebec. She is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Board Associate with the Canadian Policy Research Networks and a governor with the Association des Diplômés de Polytechnique.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations to focus research and aid the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada's social, cultural and economic life.
