OTTAWA, February 2, 2005 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume Dan-D Pak Rice Toonies Pizza Flavour Rice Crackers. This product contains a non-permitted colour, Sudan I, which is considered to be carcinogenic. The affected Dan-D Pak Rice Toonies Pizza Flavour Rice Crackers is sold in 90 g size packages bearing UPC 7 70795 80005 4 and lot number 5193. This product, imported from Thailand, was distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Importer Dan-D Foods Ltd., Richmond, British Columbia is recalling the product from the marketplace. Sudan I, a red dye, is not allowed as a food colour in Canada. It has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
